Recent Portable Activities (POTA)

Over the past few months I have done a number of portable Amateur Radio activities as part of the “Parks On The Air” Scheme. This is a great excuse to go and visit your local attractions while also enjoying your hobby.

The Adventure Starts

Bardney Lime Woods

My first outing for POTA was at Bardney Lime Woods.

The setup for this was my 40m end fed half wave on a fibreglass pole. This was supported using a drive on base.

Over 10 contacts have been made which made it a successful activation.

Gibraltar Point

So this was my second adventure out. This one was more organised by those that had caught the bug the first time. We set up in the corner of the car park and got calling.

Only a short activation though as conditions were not the best and we were mainly there to perfect the setup. Multiple operator took turns to make their 10 contacts.

Lake District National Park

This was my first solo outing and was part of a holiday I was on. I picked a spot in a large carpark but this time set the radio up in the car as the wind was blowing quite strong. I had the help of the misses to take some photos and keep me company.

Lincolnshire Wolds

Moving on the next location. This was in the depths of winter in December. It was a quick trip out before work but it kept me out of trouble.

This was the first outing of the simple HamStick setup on the roof of the car.

Second Visits

From this I’ve started making second visits to certain locations such as Gibraltar Point, again using the simplified HamStick Setup for a quick activation.

  1. Hi Steven, I hope you get this ok. When activating GB-0075 Lincs Wolds, can one activate from anywhere inside the AONB ? It might be obvious that the POTA map yellow spot is in the middle of a road! lol

    • Yep. Anywhere within the boundary. Follow this link and it will open MagicMaps with all of the areas which should be included as part of POTA active. Use it to fins the boundaries of all the areas. magic Map
